Otorhinolaryngology ( Ear- Nose & Throat) is a fascinating discipline. What is not always apparent to the naked eye, can have an enormous influence on our quality of life. It affects all the 5 senses, breathing and the maintenance of balance. The upper aero-digestive tract is the portal to the body. The ears, nose and throat form part of this system, and they are all connected. Hence the name Otorhinolaryngology, the Latin word for Ear- Nose & Throat.

As a surgeon, he is involved with the University of Pretoria’s Cochlear Implant Group.

Dr Smit has been practicing as an Ear- Nose- & Throat specialist in Pretoria since March 2012.
He completed his studies in Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pretoria in February 2012. After his studies he spent time under the tutorship of dr Miles Goldsmith, voted one of “100 best doctors in the USA”, at the Georgia Ear Institute, USA. He has a family-friendly Ear- Nose- & Throat practice, with special interests in paediatric otolaryngology, general and specialized ear surgery, nose- and sinus surgery, reconstructive nose surgery and cochlear implants.


His father, doctor Chris Smit, a pioneer in the field of cosmetic nose surgery in South Africa and renowned ear surgeon since 1972, has been instrumental in training him since 2006. They continue to have a close personal and working relationship and Dr. Smit senior regularly assists during surgery. Apart from work, doctor Anton Smit enjoys playing golf, jogging, skiing and travelling. He also has a passion for vintage cars and planes.

The Practice

Dr. Anton Smit practices from the centrally located Mediclinic facility in Midstream, Gauteng. It is a new state-of-the-art private hospital with the best theatre and clinical facilities in close proximity to the family-friendly consulting rooms. Mediclinic Midstream is situated in Midstream Estate in the heart of Centurion, which allows for easy access from major highways in the greater Tshwane area.

Dr. Anton Smit is affiliated with various cochlear implant societies and has extensive experience in cochlear implant and other related ENT surgical procedures. Our practice offers in-depth assessments and treatment procedures as well as surgery, done at  Mediclinic Midstream and CURE Day Clinic Midstream facilities.
